Citing escalating gun carnage, the proud rebirth of white supremacist violence, and systemic income inequality, a staggering majority of Americans have begun to realize that the events of September 11, 2001, were actually retaliation for the CIA assassination of Chilean president Salvador Allende 28 years earlier, in 1973. I told you so.

While some pundits at the time argued the terrible tragedy that turned nearly 3,000 clueless Americans into heroes in the course of a single news cycle might give the nation pause to reflect on its sordid history of genocide, brutal occupations, war crimes, and human rights violations, but it turns out that the American notion that if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it is apparently stronger than science, religion, or the most popular supply-side antiperspirant.
